Throw Out Your Kids Multivitamin! By Harmony Brown

1. It has Folic Acid in it.

Folic Acid is the synthetic form of B9 and is physiologically inactive and not easy to absorb. We need to make sure our kids vitamins include the active form, methyl folate. The many benefits of methylated folate are crucial for an active and developing child, and it’s imperative that the form of B9 they consume deliver those benefits in supporting the following.

• Growth, renewal, and total functioning of cells, tissues and organs.

• Essential for the brain development and in making key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

• Proven to support a healthy mood, memory and other cognitive functions, and behavior.

• Enhances the mood benefits of SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine).

• Promotes production of melatonin (our major sleep hormone).

• Regulates homocysteine, an inflammatory and potentially harmful metabolic by-product.

• Promotes healthy pregnancy and reduces birth defects.

When reading labels look for these:






2. It has Cyanocobalamin in it.

There are four types of B12 and Cyanocobalamin is the cheapest form and not easily absorbed. Look on the label for Methylcobalamin! Not only is it bioavailable and easily utilized in the body, it is the specific form of B12 needed for nervous system health. It is also easily retained in higher amounts within your tissues, helps with red blood cell formation and turning the food they eat into energy, boosting immunity, improving detoxification and helps form DNA and RNA so they can make new cells and grow!

When reading labels look for Methylcobalamin and ditch the Cyanocobalamin.

3. It has added sugar (Whaaaat!!!)

As if our kids need more sugar, now we have to worry about added sugars in their multivitamins? Just say no to sugar in vitamins! I’m pretty sure I don’t need to elaborate on this.

However, if you are in love with your vitamin and it has all the correct forms of methylated folate and B12 then PLEASE make sure the first ingredient ISN’T sugar!

When reading the labels please throw it out if the first 1 or 2 ingredients are any of the following:

Glucose Syrup


Coconut Palm Sugar


High Fructose Corn Syrup


Beet Sugar

Cane Sugar

Literally there are like 60+ names that sugar hides under… don’t get fooled. Oh… and organic sugar is still sugar!

4. It uses the synthetic form of Vitamin E.

Supplementing with the “DL-alpha tocopherol” has actually been associated with SHORTER lifespan, SERIOUSLY! The non-synthetic counterpart to look for is named “d-alpha-tocopherol,” and is 1 of the 4 tocopherols. Naturally occurring vitamin E exists in eight chemical forms that have varying levels of biological activity: alpha-tocopherol, beta-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol and delta-tocopherol and alpha-tocotrienol, beta-tocotrienol, gamma-tocotrienol and delta-tocotrienol. Vitamin E works as an antioxidant in the body. Antioxidants are elements that protect cell membranes from damage. Supplementation with α-tocopherol was found to show the most benefit in brain health and cognition and α-tocopherol appears to be the form of vitamin E with the greatest nutritional significance.

5. It has Dye in it!

This is just crazy to me! You go out of your way to purchase a vitamin to keep your kids healthy and hopefully well behaved in school and they are formulated with artificial dyes and coloring that do the exact opposite! If your vitamin lists anything in the way of Blue 1, 2 or 3, Red 40, Yellow 5 or 6, artificial colors or FD&C Lakes…. throw it away or simply put it back on the shelf and move on. (there are many more but these are just a few)

This is quote is straight from the FDA “exposure to food and food components, including AFC [artificial food colors] and preservatives, may be associated with behavioral changes, not necessarily related to hyperactivity, in certain susceptible children with ADHD and other problem behaviors, and possibly in susceptible children from the general population.”

In the UK artificial dyes are allowed for use, but require a warning label stating, “May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.”

Of course we know kids are more likely to take vitamins that are the colors of a unicorn, so look for natural food based colors such as:

Red: Red beet juice/powder

Purple: Concord grapes

Blue: blueberries

Yellow: Tumeric, saffron

Orange: Pumpkin, Carrot Juice, sweet potatoes, paprika

Green: Spinach or Kale Juice, matcha powder

We all want the very best for our children and high quality vitamins are essential in optimizing their health as well as filling any nutritional gaps. Hopefully, you now have the confidence in choosing your kids next multivitamin as well as the knowledge to put the bad ones back on the shelf!
