May is Skin Cancer awareness month, so no better time to talk sunscreen! Summer is here and we all plan on spending more time outside. While our bright sun provides us with the necessary Vitamin D, improves our mood and regulates our sleep rhythms, it can also be dangerous to our skin and health. We need to have a safe balance of sun exposure while protecting our skin from harmful UVA rays which are associated with premature skin aging, and UVB rays which are associated with the development of skin cancer. The type of sunscreen you use really matters. It not only protects you from sun damage, it can make a significant difference to your health. Start by eliminating conventional chemical sunscreens. They are often found on the drugstore shelves and have the highest hazard ratings on the EWG (Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep Database). The EWG is a nonprofit company that rates products for their level of safety. The EWG has a great website and a free app for your iPhone. Next time you are in the store and ready to buy that favorite sunscreen - scan it with the EWG app and see how it rates on the hazard scale. You will be surprised. Some of the harmful chemicals found in drug store sunscreens include Retinyl Palmitate, Avonbenzone, Octinoxate and Oxybenzone. Oxybenzone is the chemical responsible for killing the coral reefs and has been banned from all sunscreens in Hawaii. Chemical sunscreens are linked to reproductive hormone disruption, allergies and other serious health problems. Our skin is our largest organ. Through our skin these chemicals get into our bloodstream, infiltrate our circulatory systems, and have been found in blood, urine and breastmilk. Yikes! Instead, opt for mineral sunscreens made with non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Mineral sunscreens effectively block UVA and UVB exposure. There is no evidence of hormone disruption and they are less likely to cause skin allergies and serious health problems. I personally like using Beautycounter’s Countersun SPF 30 Mineral Lotion and Mist. Every ingredient in this product is screened for safety, sourced responsibly and meet the highest standards in the industry. To learn more about Beautycounter’s ingredient selection process please click here: https://www.beautycounter.com/safety This non-toxic sunscreen has the lowest hazard rating in EWG’s Skin Deep Database. The spray sunscreen bottle is powered by air so no harmful chemicals are exposed to you or the environment. Most spray sunscreens use aerosol which is linked to air pollution which can cause dramatic health impacts around the world. It is water-resistant (up to 40 minutes), and formulated with non-nano zinc and California Poppy. The SPF 30 formulation provides an effective shield from UVA and UVB, while having a gentle and pleasant feeling on the skin. Its smooth, nourishing formula blends evenly onto skin with limited white residue. It is great for people and kids with sensory sensitivities. It has a very light citrus scent and isn’t too thick or sticky like most mineral sunscreens. My kids like the feel of it and don’t complain when I tell them to lather up! My son with sensory sensitivities finally has a sunscreen he can use and not have any issues! And another bonus- It is reef friendly and safe! So good for our environment and our bodies and health.
